# Relationships with XPM and FYI

If you use Xero Practice Manager (XPM) or FYI Elite, OnboardMe keeps your client
relationships in line with them, so you don't have to enter them twice.

Integration

Direction

What it means

XPM

Two-way

Changes in OnboardMe are sent to XPM, and changes in XPM come into OnboardMe.

FYI Elite

FYI to OnboardMe only

Relationships from FYI are brought into OnboardMe. Changes in OnboardMe aren't
sent to FYI.

Why it helps

 * Your existing XPM or FYI relationships show in OnboardMe and in structure
   diagrams [https://onboardme.help.center/article/1188] without re-keying.

 * With XPM, relationships your clients give you during onboarding
[https://onboardme.help.center/article/1189] end up in XPM too.

 * Both sides of each relationship are kept together, so a director shows on the
   person and on the company.

There's nothing extra to switch on. Relationships sync as part of your existing
XPM or FYI client sync, and show on the client's Relationships tab like any
other relationship.

XPM: TWO-WAY SYNC

FROM ONBOARDME TO XPM

When you add, change, end or remove a relationship in OnboardMe, it's sent to
XPM straight away in the background.

In OnboardMe

In XPM

Add a relationship

The relationship is added.

Change the dates, number of shares or percentage

The relationship is updated.

Set an End Date

The end date is added.

Change the Relationship Type or Related Client

The old relationship is removed and a new one is added, because XPM can't change
these on an existing relationship.

Remove a relationship

The relationship is removed.

Relationships from a completed onboarding are sent the same way, once the
clients have been sent to XPM.

> Important: Both clients must be linked to XPM clients. If either one isn't
> linked yet, the relationship stays in OnboardMe only. It's sent the next time
> a relationship on that client is saved after both clients are linked.

FROM XPM TO ONBOARDME

OnboardMe picks up relationships when it syncs clients from XPM. This happens
every hour for clients changed in XPM, and in the full nightly sync.

 * Relationships added in XPM are added in OnboardMe, on both clients.

 * Changes to dates, shares or percentages in XPM update OnboardMe.

 * Relationships removed in XPM are removed from OnboardMe.

 * A relationship that matches one already in OnboardMe (same clients and type)
is linked to it, so you don't get duplicates.

Relationships to an XPM client that isn't in OnboardMe are skipped. They come in
once that client is synced or linked.

> Note: If a change you made in OnboardMe couldn't be sent to XPM, for example
> because the connection had expired, XPM's version wins at the next sync. If a
> relationship you removed comes back, reconnect XPM and remove it again.

FYI ELITE: BRINGING RELATIONSHIPS IN

If you use FYI Elite, OnboardMe brings in the relationships recorded in FYI
every hour, along with your clients.

 * Relationships added in FYI are added in OnboardMe, on both clients.

 * Changes to dates, shares or percentages in FYI update OnboardMe.

 * Relationships removed in FYI are removed from OnboardMe.

 * Relationships to an FYI client that isn't linked to an OnboardMe client are
skipped until the client is linked.

FYI doesn't yet let other systems add or change relationships, so the sync only
runs one way:

 * Relationships you add in OnboardMe, or from a completed onboarding, stay in
OnboardMe. Add them in FYI as well if you need them there.

 * Make changes to relationships that came from FYI in FYI. A change made in
OnboardMe is replaced by FYI's version at a later sync.

> Note: Relationships are only brought in from FYI Elite, not FYI Docs. If
> you're connected to both XPM and FYI, relationships sync with XPM only. FYI
> gets its relationships from XPM, so this keeps one source of truth.

TROUBLESHOOTING

What you see

Why

What to do

A relationship from XPM or FYI is missing

The other client isn't in OnboardMe or isn't linked.

Sync or link the other client, then wait for the next sync.

A relationship added in OnboardMe isn't in XPM

One of the clients isn't linked to an XPM client.

Link both clients to XPM, then edit and save the relationship.

A change made in OnboardMe was undone

The relationship came from FYI, or the change couldn't be sent to XPM.

Make the change in FYI, or check your XPM connection and make it again.
