Let your clients tell you how they're connected while they complete their onboarding: who the directors and shareholders are, who the trustees and beneficiaries are, and so on. When the onboarding is completed, OnboardMe saves the relationships to your client records for you.
Why it helps
Clients record their own structure, so you don't have to chase it or key it in.
Existing relationships are shown so clients can confirm them or tell you one has ended.
Relationships are saved to both clients and sent to XPM when the onboarding is completed.
Turn on the Relationships step
The Relationships step is off until you turn it on. You need to be an Owner or Admin.
Go to Settings > Business > System Settings.
Set Relationships to Optional or Mandatory.

Option | What it does |
|---|---|
Hidden | No Relationships step. This is the default. |
Optional | Clients see the step but don't have to add anything. |
Mandatory | Each client on the onboarding needs at least one relationship before they can continue. A relationship already on the client record counts. |
The setting applies to every onboarding you send. Clients added to an onboarding for an ID check only don't see the Relationships step, even when it's Mandatory.
What your client sees
The Relationships step asks the client how they're connected to the other people and businesses on the onboarding.

To add a relationship, the client clicks Add a relationship and answers three short questions:
Who they're connected to. They choose from the other people and businesses on the same onboarding.
How they're connected, for example director, shareholder or trustee.
The details: the number of shares for shareholders, the percentage for partners, and when it started. Only the number of shares is required.
Each relationship shows as a sentence, for example "Sarah Smith is a Director of Smith Holdings Pty Ltd", so it's easy to check.
Tip: Add everyone in the group to the onboarding. Clients can only link to people and businesses on the same onboarding.
Existing relationships
Relationships already on your client records show in the step. Clients can't change or remove these, but they can tell you one has ended: they click This has ended and enter the date it Ended on. They can undo this with It's still current.
Relationships you added to the onboarding yourself are marked Added by your adviser.
Completing an onboarding for your client
You can review and change relationships on an onboarding before it's completed:
Go to Onboarding and open the onboarding.
Click Stepper, choose the client on the left, then click the Relationships step.

You see the relationships already on the client record, plus any changes made on this onboarding:
New relationships are marked New.
Relationships the client has said have ended are marked Ending with the date.
Click Add Relationship to add one. You can link to any of your clients, not just the people on the onboarding.
Click Mark as ended to set an end date on an existing relationship.
Use the edit and bin icons to change or remove a new relationship.
Note: Changes made here are written to the client records when the onboarding is completed, not straight away.
When the onboarding is completed
When you complete the onboarding:
New relationships are saved to both clients' records.
End dates are saved to the existing relationships.
If you're connected to XPM, the changes are sent to XPM once the clients are linked to XPM clients. See Relationships with XPM and FYI.
Until then, nothing changes on your client records.
